Rhinella marina

Marine toad

The most registered amphibian species during January on iNaturalist for Peru: our well-known giant toad.
Described by Carl von Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae as marine toad, Rana marina.
In 1799 Schneider incorporated it into the genus Bufo, a name with which it became widely known, until a few years ago when it was incorporated into a new genus to differentiate the New World species: Rhinella.
In Peru it is a species present throughout the Amazon region, but also in inter-Andean valleys of the eastern Andes.
There are also records of specimens in Lima and around the city, but there is still no evidence to estimate that there are individuals in sufficient numbers to maintain viable populations of this species.
